Check into a hotel for a night or two and step straight into the heart of the action.

Winter is the perfect time to find a cosy cafe, check out the museum and of course, discover the magic of Illuminate 91ý. Watch the kids’ faces light up as the city comes alive after dark with stunning light installations, immersive art, and interactive experiences dotted throughout the streets and laneways. And then after all that, stroll back to your room and snuggle into a comfy bed for a movie night.

Whether it’s day or night, rain or shine, the 91ý CBD is full of family fun this winter. Here’s our suggestions of how to spend a fun couple of nights “on holidays’” with the kids right here in the 91ý CBD.

Stay in the heart of the city at Crowne Plaza 91ý

Pack your bags and check in to Crowne Plaza 91ý, right in the middle of all the city fun! Snuggle into comfy rooms with floor-to-ceiling views, splash around in the heated outdoor pool (yep, even in winter!), and enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast before heading out on your city adventures.

You’ll be just a short walk from family-friendly favourites like Rundle Mall, the 91ý Zoo, and Illuminate 91ý. After a big day out, head up to Koomo for dinner with a view or treat yourselves to a sky-high kids’ high tea at Luna10.

With friendly service, spacious rooms, and everything you need right at your fingertips, Crowne Plaza 91ý makes your winter weekend away with the kids easy, cosy, and full of fun.

High Tea in the Clouds at Crowne Plaza 91ý

And while you’re there, make your stay at Crowne Plaza 91ý even more memorable by booking in for their high tea experience.

Head up, up, up to level 10 of 91ý’s tallest building for a super special high tea at Koomo and Luna10! With awesome views over the city and a tower of tasty treats, it’s the perfect way to feel fancy while having fun.

You’ll get to try TEN different yummy goodies – think sweet surprises, savoury bites, and treats made from fresh South Aussie ingredients. Parents can enjoy a glass of bubbles or a fancy tea from Brackendale Tea Co. while kids sip on juice and pick their favourites from the high tea stand.

Light Up your Weekend at Illuminate 91ý

The hottest (and brightest) event in 91ý this winter is of course Illuminate 91ý.

This city-wide celebration of light, art, music, and technology transforms 91ý into a glowing wonderland every July – and it’s a must-do for families! From giant interactive light installations and colourful projections on buildings, to immersive experiences and night-time adventures, there’s something to wow kids (and grown-ups) of all ages.

Rug up, grab a hot choc, and wander through the city streets as they come alive after dark. With many free outdoor experiences and ticketed events that are perfect for curious minds, Illuminate 91ý is the ultimate winter night out with the kids.

Katina was great with the kids, really taking time to explain the meaning behind the art in a way they would understand.

Chill Out at Himeji Japanese Gardens

If you need some quiet time during your whirlwind city mini break we know the perfect spot. The Japanese Himeji Gardens on South Terrace are FREE and a great place to wander. Enter the gardens during daylight hours and you’ll instantly feel more peaceful. There is a lovely water feature that is home to large goldfish, ducks and turtles, there is also a waterfall under the trees too.

Please respect the tranquillity of the Japanese Himeji Gardens. While we think all kids should be able to experience this wonderful place please understand that other garden visitors are probably here for the peace and calming qualities too. This isn’t a park for ball games and loud family gatherings – take the family across the road to the newly renovated Marshmallow Park or South Terrace Glover Playground which are perfect for that!

Best Sushi in 91ý (for kids) /sushi-in-adelaide-for-kids/ /sushi-in-adelaide-for-kids/#respond Tue, 06 May 2025 09:15:23 +0000 /?p=89250 Welcome to the ultimate sushi adventure in 91ý, where even the pickiest little eaters will become sushi enthusiasts! Either that or they will continue to ask for sushi with no seaweed like my kids. Rice, my kids say they eat sushi but basically they just eat rice. However at Kids in 91ý, we’ve embarked on a mission to uncover the city’s best sushi spots that cater specifically to kids (and their discerning taste buds). Prepare for a mouthwatering experience filled with laughter and ridiculous chopstick challenges that will have your little ones saying “arigato” in no time.

From colorful fish-shaped creations to bite-sized rolls bursting with flavor, eat in, take away, trains, restaurants and even sushi disguised as a burrito…..here are some of 91ý’s best. PS No waiting, kid friendly options, eat with your hands….plus it’s (mostly) healthy for the win!

Hands down our favourite sushi in the 91ý CBD. Located with the Level 1 eateries in Rundle Mall Plaza, this magnificent conveyor belt sushi has it all. Fresh sushi at great prices, an extensive Japanese menu comprising all of our classic favourites like Karrage Chicken and Miso Soup and more. The kids absolutely love it.

A must stop for Rundle Mall shoppers!

Yep you read that right. Anyone else love a quick and easy sushi dinner with the kids?

OKAMI Japanese Restaurant at Glenunga have an unlimited all you can eat sushi menu For adults $42.80 and there are discounts for kids

Under 3 years are FREE 4-8 years are $20.80 9-12 years are $25

Unlimited sushi, rolls, steaks, fries, and more and more. You can start with Entrees and finish off with sweets. If your kids eat sushi like our kids eat sushi, you’ll know that’s a great price!

91ý Hills rejoice! You get in on the sushi action these days too! We recently enjoyed the freshest, most wonderful sushi while in Mt Barker. This new sushi train is perfect for dining in or take away, and offers all of the highest quality traditional Japanese dishes that you could ever hope to find. Much of it is gluten free too!

Find them in North 91ý, Port 91ý, South Gate, Tea Tree Plaza, Mount Gambier and at Kurralta Park!

Sushi Hiro are in the business of making people happy, healthy and feel fresh. Its a perfect on the go alternative to fast food, and our kids just loved it!

You can buy gift cards (ummmm hello excellent present) and even join the membership free to receive special offers and discounts. Check it out on their website.

https://www.sushihiro.com.au/

Find Sushi Hub at each end of Rundle Mall and the added bonus of a sit down sushi Go Round at the Pulteney St end.

We can’t go to the mall with out picking up an iconic takeaway sushi sandwich (yep TRIANGLES of sushi goodness) and now the Rundle Sqaure store has launched 45minute sit down unlimited sushi & sushimi for $36 (adults) $26 (children under 1.3m). Of course you can also just pay per plate in the traditional manner.

This has to be one of 91ýs most popular, best and freshest sushi options!

Is it sushi? Is it a burrito? IT’S BOTH!

Sushi Burri in Waymouth St, 91ý is PERFECT for kids who might be a little aprehensive about trying sushi. They are 91ý’s first sushi burrito & say it’s a “bigger, better version of your traditional sushi.” We can’t help but agree.

Plus it’s a super cool little shop – sit inside or enjoy the sun outside on a nice day.

Sushi Bar Genki

This one is on Gouger St in 91ý, so you just know it’s gonna be good! Plus they do heaps more than just sushi, they serve a full range of Japanese food, including stuff your kids probably haven’t tried before (sea urchin, anyone?). Go for the sushi, stay for the scallops & sashimi. Yummo.

Mugen Sushi Train

This one is in North 91ý Village. Kids love booth seating, right & these big comfy booths are a hit! Our kids loved the good ‘ol Teriyaki Chicken, while we opted for some Tempura. Five stars all round!

Sushi Arari, Woodcroft

The little sushi store that could! Sushi Arari is in the Woodcroft Town Shopping Centre & doesn’t have much of a social media presence but they get HEAPS of great Google reviews which is always a good sign. Plus it’s always nice to support a small, family owned business.

Be sure to head in next time you’re down south!

Taki Sushi, 91ý

Fresh and healthy, Taka Sushi in Rundle Place is great for sushi-lovers of all ages. It’s a convenient and inexpensive lunch without compromising on delicious, quality food. Us adults devoured the Spicy Katsu Chicken and the kids raved on about the tuna and avocado rolls.

Go for the sushi, but save room for some dumplings because… YUM!

Sushi Planet

Not gonna lie, we may have included this one more for the parents than the kids…..cause sushi + cocktails? UM YES PLEASE!

Sushi Planet has been a staple of West Terrace in the city for a long time now. They do lunch, dinner AND free delivery if you order the minimum amount (which is never an issue in our house!). Perfect for grabbing on your way to or from town.

Kintaro Sushi

Find their stores here: 91ý – Norwood – Tea Tree Plaza – Brickworks – Colonnades – Elizabeth – Kurralta Park. Yep, that’s pretty much all of 91ý covered!
Free sushi on your birthday? Make sure you’re a Loyalty card member & you can grab a free meal worth up to $10. Happy Birthday!

Sushi Train

Probably the most well known sushi in Australia, Sushi Train have 8 locations in 91ý all within 10kms from the CBD. We love the kids meal deal (served in a train) and look out for school holiday specials at your local store.

Whale Watching Victor Harbor /whale-watching-victor-harbor/ /whale-watching-victor-harbor/#respond Wed, 24 Apr 2024 22:50:00 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=1751 As the colder weather kicks in around 91ý, the list of things most people want to do outside dwindles. But the exciting news is that Whale Watching season has begun! From late May right up until October, Southern Right whales return to the shores around the Encounter Bay and Victor Harbor area.
Only an hour’s drive from 91ý, the southern Fleurieu Peninsula is a whale watcher’s paradise so get some warm clothes, some binoculars and head down for a day’s whale watching with the family.

The first arrivals in Encounter Bay are usually expected in mid-May, and are eagerly awaited by whale watchers who hope to catch a glimpse of the huge beasts from atop the cliffs, beaches and headlands of the area’s stunning coastline.

Thousands of visitors flock to the seaside resort town of Victor Harbor, keeping staff at the SA Whale Centre’s Information Booth very busy fielding their enquiries. In some years, the whales have attracted up to 400,000 people to the area over the winter months.

The SA Whale Centre has an online giving visitors details of when and where the whales are before they get to the area and the best places to sight them. They also have some great tips for where to spot whales, how to identify them and what the different whale behaviours mean.

In 2025 the SA Whale Centre has also released its official whale sighting map, beautifully designed by the fabulous South Australian artist Pip Kruger. Learn how to spot the difference between these gentle giants, plus discover the best vantage points to catch a glimpse — whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or a first-timer with binoculars in hand.

Grab your free map at the Victor Harbor Visitor Centre or the SA Whale Centre, and start planning your winter whale adventures now!

For example, did you know that a whale breaches for a number of reasons which can be to communicate, dislodge parasites, get a higher view, drive off predators or just play. Humpback whales can actually clear their entire body out of the water! Amazing to see!

One of our KiA families lives down in Victor Harbor and Matty has shared his favourite spots to spot whales below.

The Bluff Encounter Bay

The Bluff at Encounter Bay gives you one of the best vantage points for whale watching. The walk to the top isn’t too strenous and can be easily done by families. At the top you get a 360 degree view over the whole bay which is perfect to spot the migrating Southern Right Whales. Pack your binoculars and walking shoes and if you are lucky you might get to see a Humpback whale as well. No toilets here, but there are cafes on the esplanade just before you reach The Bluff car park.

Nakurami Kondoli (whale lookout) Encounter Bay

This look out is located at the end of Kings Beach Road in Encounter Bay. It’s a newly built platform and has a walking trail back towards the bluff. To the right of the platform is part of the Heysen trail, which takes you to Kings Head which has some stunning cliff views. This one is a great place to stop for some whale watching on the family walk.

Freeman Lookout Port Elliot

Freemans Lookout is definitely one of our favourite spots for whale watching, not only are there frequent sightings the lookout itself has seats, a telescope and information boards. There are also cafes not too far away in Port Elliot so perfect for that before or after whale watching coffee.

Hayward Court McCracken

One of our favourite spots to whale watch is on Hayward Court in McCracken. This spot is stunning and overlooks the Bay in Victor and Olivers Reef (which is one of our favourite spots for rockpools). We also love this spot as the whales are known for coming in close here which makes for some amazing photos.

The SteamRanger passes between the grassed area and the beach so not only is it a great spot for the whales, it’s also awesome for watching the trains. You do need to cross the train tracks to get down to the beach though so kids need to be supervised.

Petrel Cove Encounter Bay

Petrel Cove is one of the most popular hot spots for whale watching in the Victor Harbor region. Not only is this spot great for whale watching, it’s also the start of the encounter bikeway and part of the Victor Harbor Heritage Trail which is a family friendly 1.7km walk from Petrel Cove to Kings Beach Road.

Granite Island

Granite Island is also a great spot to whale watch. You’ll find whale information boards and some of the best unobstructed views across the water.

Discover Victor Harbour - SA Whale Centre - Kids in 91ý

S.A Whale Centre, Victor Harbor

And of course no whale watching adventure is complete without a trip to the S.A Whale Centre. Visitors can experience the natural wonders of the deep, explore the world heritage listed railway building, and gain further knowledge about Victor Harbor and South Australia’s marine treasures. The centre provides whale sighting information, education and research support services through a range of mediums and brings together a unique collection of historic treasures, marine, cultural, and aboriginal heritage to deliver an inspiring and enjoyable experience for every visitor.

click here to find out more

Information Booth, and Whale Information Hotline on 1900 WHALES or 1900 942 537 all offer the latest updates on sightings in Encounter Bay and across the state. Whale watchers can also collect a free Whale Information Booklet from the Centre during the season, which includes a detailed map of Encounter Bay to help locate the whales quickly.

Or if you’re after something up close and personal check out who offer a 90-minute Southern Ocean Adventure Tour that departs from the Granite Island Causeway.

Easy Winter Craft Ideas /easy-winter-craft-ideas/ /easy-winter-craft-ideas/#respond Tue, 08 Jun 2021 23:19:00 +0000 /?p=53179 Here are a couple of quick and easy art activities inspired by Winter.

SNOWFLAKE DECORATIONS

You will need:

  • Paper
  • Scissors

Method:

Start with a square. Fold in half to make a triangle, then fold the points upwards (check picture for reference) Then draw the snowflake design and cut out!

Make a few in different sizes and decorate a wall or door!

SNOWMAN SURPRISE

You will need:

  • Clear contact
  • Scissors
  • Coloured card (or an old cereal packet you can cut up and colour)
  • Either old lace doily from an op shop, cotton balls or white paper

Method:

This one is really simple but kept my three year old entertained for quite some time and she was thrilled with the result.

Simply draw the snowman shape on the contact. Cut out and peel off backing. Stick to door or wall by folding over a couple of centimeters at the top and bottom.

Let your child decide what accessories the snowman will have. If they can draw and cut them out by themselves, give them ownership of their artwork. My three year old drew the circle buttons, the lines on the carrot and the shape of his smile and I cut them out for her.
