Ever wanted to bite the head off of a T-Rex? Or maybe sip on a delicious chocolate milkshake while under the watchful gaze of a suspended bottle nose dolphin skeleton? Maybe you’ve never thought about it, but our point is, eating out with kids around 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ doesn’t have to be expensive, or boring. We love the South Australian Museum, hello FREE, airconditioned, indoor activity.

Heading to the Museum Café is a highlight for our family outings. The relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a coffee break while the kids enjoy a bite to eat. We love how they offer a variety of options to please everyone’s tastes. From healthy choices like the fresh and vibrant ‘Little Dippers Snack Box’, packed with fruits, veggies, and dips perfect for little hands, to more indulgent treats like hot dogs and dino nuggets, there’s something to keep everyone happy.

What we think sets the Museum Café apart is how it combines great food with a fun, educational experience. The kids are fascinated by the museum exhibits, we always have to see the giant squid (any one else?) and after exploring, they’re eager to refuel with a meal that’s as exciting as their museum adventures. The dino nuggets are a particular hit, sparking their imaginations and adding a playful twist to their meal, while the healthy grazing box helps balance out their energy levels. More of a hot dog family? These are huge! Further to this the coffee is great and there is a big range of uncomplicated options for parents too, including a rotating specials board.

The cafe’s location obviously allows us to seamlessly integrate a meal with our museum visit. It’s not just about filling up; it’s about slowing down and enhancing the overall experience. The kids can enjoy their food while discussing their favorite exhibits, making it a great way to combine learning with dining. A lot of people also miss the undercover outdoor seating tucked around the corner. Highly recommend for kids like mine who are professional level crumb droppers. Plus, a bit of fresh air and some lawn to burn around on never hurt.

Give it a try next time you are in the city. The tram makes access easy and you’ll all love the family-friendly environment, ensuring that everyone from toddlers to adults, can enjoy a pleasant meal before diving back into more museum exploration.

Last thing. The cookies and goodies on the counter are the absolute cutest thing ever. I hope they never ever take them away!

Farm Shed Heritage Museum, Kadina /farm-shed-museum-kadina/ /farm-shed-museum-kadina/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 04:01:35 +0000 /?p=47056 A hidden gem and definite highlight at the Copper Coast Tourism Centre activity list was the Farm Shed Heritage Museum. The name is deceiving – I was expecting a single shed with a few tractors and boy, was I wrong! It comprises of a seemingly unending number of displays, large sheds and warehouses housing a range of historical and current day farming machines and tools. Every kid loves a tractor and they won’t be disappointed here. Take your time wandering through and seeing how farming was done in years gone by, admiring the serious amount of hard work that would have gone into doing tasks that we take for granted today.

There are displays going into the history of the region – having already spent a few days on the Copper Coast, the kids were able to understand different points of reference and I have no doubt that they have tucked a few little tidbits of info into their brains!

Matta House is an historically accurate house to show what life was like in the late 1800s in the area, which for fellow Downton Abbey fans (Hi!), you will love. The old Kulpara Primary School remains and to sit the kids down in the ye-olde classroom was really cool. I am sure the kids loved being back at school during their school holidays but again, they will thank me later with the gift of learning. The Grandma and ex-teacher in our group loved this and spent ages reminiscing about their own childhood classrooms!

Take your time at The Farm Shed Heritage Museum, there is a lot to take in. There is every type of machinery imaginable, so much information about the past and the people of the Copper Coast and tons of displays on all aspects of “life back then”. We played “hey kids do you know what this is?” many times during our visit, with everyone having a good giggle as they tried to guess what and old phone, shoe polisher, vaccum cleaners and many more relics from days gone by were!

The Farm Shed Heritage Museum is open 7 days a week (excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and weekends and Public Holidays 10am to 4pm. Allow at least an hour for your visit.
Adults: $12 | Children: $3 | Family (2+3): $30

Guided tours are available for groups, please call Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre on 08 8821 2333 to arrange.
A wheelchair and walking frame are available to use within the museum, please call to ensure availability.

The Vickers Vimy /the-vickers-vimy/ /the-vickers-vimy/#respond Mon, 19 Dec 2022 06:29:10 +0000 /?p=102614 From Monday 19th of December you can visit one of the world’s most prized aviation exhibits at the ground floor of the terminal at 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Airport, opposite the entrance of the Altura Hotel.

The brand new state of the art exhibition showcases the historic 100 year old bi-plane made famous from its journey from England to Australia in 1919. It took brothers Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith along with Jim Bennet and Wally Shiers 28 days to make the journey with just a map and a compass. The epic flight was made just 16 years after the Wright Brothers flew the first-ever powered aircraft. Pretty impressive, right?!

The new exhibition features interactive touch screens, projection canvas, and artefacts from the original journey all thanks to award-winning experience design studio, Sandpit. It’s a complete audio visual experience showcasing the story of the Vickers Vimy plane, the flight, the crew and the heroic journey. With the help of the Young 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Voices choir, Sandpit also produced the first ever recording of the song Our Flying Boys, a celebration song written by E Ronchetti-Allein and Jack Fewster which can be heard for the first time in 100 years at the exhibit alongside an interview by the celebrated pilot, Wally Shiers.

South Australian Maritime Museum /maritime-museum/ /maritime-museum/#respond Fri, 19 Jun 2020 22:15:38 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=757 collection began in 1872 to preserve, explore and celebrate the human history of our oceans and rivers. It is Australia’s oldest nautical collection and also includes new features, such as the Port River Dolphin area.

Renowned for its innovative approach to maritime history and education, the Museum incorporates the historic Bond Store with three floors of exhibitions, the Port 91¹û¶³´«Ã½ Lighthouse from South Neptune Island, and the much-loved steam tug, Yelta.

The museum is further towards the ‘Port’, but on the same street, as the Aviation Museum and the Railway Museumso you can hit all three in one day if you think your family can handle it! It’s probably more suited to school aged children, as there is a lot of information and a interactive aspects to the museum. It has a lot of big things to look at, but many more small aspects that won’t suit the younger children.

There is a small play area within one of the exhibits on the 2nd level for kids to climb through and investigate. There are stairs up to the second level and down to the basement, but there is also disabled access.

Open 10am – 5pm daily. (closed Christmas Day)
