Offering a unique experience for both parents and kids alike, gosh we love a quality outing like this when there is also something special for the kids to eat and a few activities to entertain them.

With the most gorgeous panoramic views of vines and the Gulf St Vincent you will be feeling instantly relaxed on arrival and ready to kick back for an afternoon of grazing, acoustic tunes, wine tasting, lawn games and most importantly DONKEY pats! Yes, meet Pedro and Pinto! You can likely even score a carrot to feed them and the best news? Their donkey run has recently been extended so as they are now closer to the cellar door!

The beautiful knowledgeable staff will have you sorted in no time at all, and this is the perfect spot for families looking to enjoy a day out.

The wines are small batch and distinctive. Made with a whole lot of gentle love and nurturing by award winning winemaker Michael Sexton. They are vibrant and bright and celebrate the authentic naturally occurring characters of each variety and vintage.

The cellar door was undoubtedly designed with families in mind, offering a quality, creative and delicious kids’ lunch option that will keep little people happy. You can’t go wrong with crispy real chicken bites and hand cut fries, served with a cute fun sized chocolate on the side, plus these meals come with a juice box and the serving is big enough for bigger kids too.

Now, don’t expect the kids to sit around for too long – ours couldn’t keep away from the friendly donkey’s, they also danced and played games on the lawns, took Uno out to one of the picnic rugs, enjoyed spotting ducks and also bombed around with other kids for some winery lawn community fun.

When it comes to outdoor space, Main and Cherry Cellar Door truly shines. There’s plenty of room for kids to burn around and be kids, out of the way and with in sight, making it easy for parents to relax with a glass of wine while their little ones play safely. The picturesque grounds are ideal for a laid-back afternoon. Adding to the welcoming vibe, Main and Cherry also hosts a great line-up of acoustic musicians, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere perfect for a family outing. Check their for details.

It was only upon departure that we realized they also offer craft beers, so we did the right thing and took a four-pack home to enjoy later!

Main anFor the beer lovers, there is a fun little beer collab of Main and Cherry x Prancing Pony ales. Sold!

Whether you’re there to enjoy the food, music, a guided tasting or simply the great atmosphere, this winery has everything you need for a beautiful quality, memorable day out. Even the coffee was brilliant!

Grünthal Brew /grunthal-brew/ /grunthal-brew/#respond Fri, 23 Jan 2026 05:20:09 +0000 /?p=95565 Family celebrations, a meal out or a lazy Sunday drive to the hills needn’t bore your kids and have them whinging at you. Grunthal Brew is the perfect venue that has it all, and the kids are not going to want to leave. So text the friends you don’t see often enough, book the birthday lunch for your self and get up to Grunthal.

Missing the yellow cow from the main street of Hahndorf? You’ll find it here, with the cute little Udder Delights Cheese Cellar tucked into this venue, where you can also enjoy great food, craft beer, wine, gin flights and a fun kids menu that can all be enjoyed in this super high quality. family-friendly space. Think umbrellas outdoors, a creek, expansive lawn, a cubby, a slack line for the kids to balance on and just room to explore.

When its cool, there is a delightful fireplace doing a great job of keeping the space warm and cosy, surrounded by couches. The main dining area, ā€˜The Great Hall’, includes tables, booths, bar tables, and also offers the ā€˜Grünthal Greenhouse’ for private functions. When it’s sunny out, there are shady trees and umbrellas for days!

The at Grünthal is definitely a big step up from standard brewery fare! There are a great range of small plates, pizzas, and specials on offer. Udder Delights cheeses are well represented, with a delicious cheese fondue, a ā€˜Too Cheesy’ deep dish pizza, and even the humble toastie is made with Truffle Cheddar. The pizza is next level. The real star of the menu for the kids was the dessert (of course) – an extra special sundae topped with Persian fairy floss.

They haven’t forgotten to cater for dietary options including vegetarian, dairy free, gluten free and vegan either!

For the grown ups, there is an extensive drinks menu including tea, coffee and iced drinks, wines, three varieties of Grünthal Gin, cocktails and mocktails, and of course the extensive and delicious Grünthal beer range, including eBeer – with a new brewing technology that you’ll love hearing about.

Grünthal makes it super easy to cater for groups with a ā€œFeed my Groupā€, ā€œFeed my Partyā€ and ā€œFeed my Childā€ selection of items from the main menu.

The kids loved exploring the fantastic lawns on the bank of the Onkaparinga River. There is seating and shade on the raised terrace, and the lawns are accessible by both a ramp and stairs. We can’t think of a better place to lay down a picnic rug and enjoy a sunny afternoon watching the kids play while we had an uninterrupted adult catch up and all of the tasty things!

Before you depart, be sure to choose some gin, beer or wine to take home, and of course some of the many cheeses and trimmings on offer.

The indoor dining area is accessible with plenty of space to manoeuvre around tables and park prams. The female toilets allow enough room to leave a pram outside the cubicle door if required, and the accessible toilet is very roomy and has a full size change table, nappy disposal unit, and grab rails.

Ingenuity Baby Base seats are available to seat your little ones at the table – just another extra touch that makes this family day out so much easier.

Book it in, every one will be happy here!

Ginny Pig Distillery, Mount Compass /ginny-pig-distillery-mount-compass/ /ginny-pig-distillery-mount-compass/#respond Fri, 26 Dec 2025 01:54:10 +0000 /?p=207122 Launched in 2020 by former nurses Bec and Craig, has been quietly building a loyal following for its small-batch, award-winning gins. We’ve been enjoying their drops for a while now, so when we heard they’d opened a brand-new distillery door at their own home in Mt Compass, we jumped at the chance to visit.

Tucked away in the rolling countryside just outside McLaren Vale, this distillery door feels personal in the best way. ±õ³Łā€™s not flashy or overdone. ±õ³Łā€™s relaxed, welcoming, and the kind of place where you arrive, take a breath, and realise you’re in no rush to leave.

What really stood out to us though was how genuinely family-friendly it is. Gin tastings are usually a strictly grown-up experience, but here the kids are very much part of the visit, not an afterthought. With a kids tasting flight on offer, the whole family can sit down and enjoy the experience together, something we don’t see often, and always appreciate when we do.

The Little Trotters Tasting Flight is made for the little ones, with three drinks and three snacks. ±õ³Łā€™s such a simple idea, but honestly, it makes visiting with kids feel way more relaxed. Everyone gets to join in, no FOMO here.

And then… the butter board. Gin flights might be old hat for us grown-ups, but a butter board? That was something new, and we are very here for it.

The Little Oinker Butterboard stole the show. Imagine creamy whipped butter piled high with mini marshmallows, hundreds and thousands, dark choc chips, and a drizzle of raspberry syrup, all served with soft white bread. Sweet, sticky, ridiculous… and absolutely delightful. There are adult butter board options too, which sound very fun, but between the delicious pizzas and arancini balls, we couldn’t manage another bite and that’s our excuse to go back soon.

So yes – they’ve got great gin āœ”ļø
Delicious food āœ”ļø
Thoughtful kid-friendly options āœ”ļø

But if you need one more reason to visit, let it be the beautiful outdoor space. A relaxed patio opening onto a gorgeous stretch of green grass, surrounded by rolling countryside, birdsong, and that peaceful, slow-down feeling you don’t realise you need until you’re there. ±õ³Łā€™s quiet, intimate, and instantly makes you want to linger.

For kids, there are lawn games (giant Connect Four and Jenga), and even a piano to tinker away on. For parents, it’s the kind of place where you can actually sit back, exhale, and enjoy your drink while the kids are happily occupied.

Ginny Pig Distillery isn’t just a distillery door. ±õ³Łā€™s one of those rare spots where families genuinely feel welcome. And that’s something worth raising a glass to.

Coffee Barn and Gelateria, Moonta /coffee-barn-and-gelateria-moonta/ /coffee-barn-and-gelateria-moonta/#respond Wed, 03 Dec 2025 11:35:24 +0000 /?p=121326 Looking for the BEST gelati on the entire Yorke Peninsula?

Tucked just under 5 minutes from Moonta town centre down the Spencer Hwy is The Coffee Barn & Gelateria, a spot that’s quietly legendary on the Copper Coast. Sure, it might be off the usual tourist track, but trust us… everyone in town knows it’s worth the detour.

Carl and Emma took over a few years ago and have lovingly kept the original charm while adding their own fun, fresh ideas. From quirky cars and statues in the carpark to a cosy cafĆ©, courtyard, and enclosed verandah, every corner has personality. ±õ³Łā€™s kind of like walking into Nanna’s house, with that old-school vibe and all the delicious things you can eat laid out in front of you.

The star of the show (for the kids at least)? Gelati, made fresh onsite with flavours that change daily. When we visited, we tried Milo and a few other rotating favourites, all were incredible. Kids go wild for the ā€œEspecially For Kidsā€ sundae, where they pick a flavour and pile it high with cream, marshmallows, smarties, and chocolate sauce. And the adults? Dessert pancakes, Belgian waffles, donuts, cake slices, or fruit scones with jam and cream make it impossible to leave without indulging. Each bite of the pancakes was fluffy, decadent, and honestly, some of the best we’ve had. Milkshakes are fabulous too, creamy, thick, and packed with flavour. Coffee lovers are well looked after as well; the barista skills are top notch.

±õ³Łā€™s super family-friendly, with giant Jenga, Connect Four, and other outdoor games to keep the kids entertained, plus indoor board games for rainy days. And yes, the doggos get to join the fun too with puppaccinos, all made in-house.

The Coffee Barn & Gelateria isn’t just a stop, it’s an experience. Delicious food, playful vibes, ever-changing gelati flavours, and plenty of space for the whole family make it one of those Copper Coast gems you’ll want to revisit every time you’re on the Yorke Peninsula.

Mallee Fowl Restaurant, Monash /mallee-fowl-restaurant-monash/ /mallee-fowl-restaurant-monash/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 06:31:38 +0000 /?p=200835 If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if an Aussie bush pub, a museum, and your nan’s shed full of vintage treasures all had a love child, welcome to the .

Tucked away on the Sturt Highway in Monash just near Berri, this Riverland icon is one of those places you honestly have to see to believe. There’s old farm gear tucked between rusty signs, walls covered in Australiana, and a collection of curiosities that somehow all work together. ±õ³Łā€™s rustic, charming, a little chaotic and somehow completely perfect. A little overstimulating, but in the best possible way.

As soon as we pulled into the driveway and spotted the sign that read ā€œFree Beer Tomorrowā€, we knew this place was going to be a good time. The kids didn’t know where to look first because there’s so much happening before you’ve even parked the car. The entrance alone is a whole experience with old tractors, tin sheds and quirky signs. When the sun’s out, the outdoor dining area looks like something straight out of a movie scene, with fairy lights, plenty of tables and a big outdoor stage that would be perfect for weddings, parties or live music nights. Unfortunately, it was raining when we visited, so we couldn’t make the most of it, but trust me, we’ll be back on a sunny day to soak it all in.

And here’s something we love. Mallee Fowl runs completely off the grid. ±õ³Łā€™s solar powered, self-sufficient, and still manages to serve up some of the best country meals around. It just adds to that feeling of being somewhere special and a bit removed from the everyday.

There are animals wandering the property too, including chooks, geese, roaming peacocks, alpacas, emus and even a friendly donkey who will probably try to photobomb your family pics. The kids will love it! In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Mallee Fowl is *so* much more than a restaurant.

The menu is good old Aussie comfort food, the kind you actually want after a day exploring the Riverland. Big, hearty serves, loads of local produce and plenty of options for both grown-ups and kids. Our meals were honestly so good. The kids’ menu has all the favourites… nuggets and chips for my six year old, which disappeared in about three minutes flat. My eight year old went for the chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and reckons it was the best he’s ever had. My partner had the Reef and Beef, I went with the Chicken Bianco, and we were both super happy with our choices. The serves are huge, so definitely bring your stretchy pants. And if you can fit it in, order dessert. The menu changes each week and everything we saw heading out of the kitchen looked ridiculously good.

Families are welcome here. There are highchairs, loads of space, a relaxed, chatty vibe, and no one bats an eyelid if your toddler drops a chip or decides to have a moment. Service was excellent, warm and genuine, the kind that makes you feel like a local even if you’ve just rolled in off the highway. It really is the kind of place where you stay a little longer, laugh a little louder and leave already planning your next visit.

Whether you’re road tripping through the Riverland, chasing somewhere memorable for dinner or just love a bit of good old Aussie quirk, Mallee Fowl Restaurant is a must-stop.

Manna McLaren Vale /manna-mclaren-vale/ /manna-mclaren-vale/#respond Fri, 10 Oct 2025 21:58:15 +0000 /?p=199533 We found the best cafe in McLaren Vale! If you’re looking for a cafĆ© that feels as welcoming to little ones as it is to grownups, is an absolute gem, found right on the main street of McLaren Vale. ±õ³Łā€™s super easy to access, and even easier to love, whether you’re strolling through town or driving for a day trip in the region. This is the only cafe you’ll need.

We visited for breakfast, what a way to start the day and fuel us up for exploring wineries, playgrounds and even a local hedge maze! Standouts that we gave a solid 10/10 were the kids plate, kids pancakes, Manna corn fritters, the big Fleurieu breakfast (proudly punched in by our hungry eight year old) and the most delicious orange and raspberry pancakes you could ever think up! The drinks menu is also worth a mention, with every thing from coffee’s to smoothies, juices and the most beautiful matcha too.

There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can soak up the sunshine or stay cozy inside depending on the weather. The coffee here absolutely hits the spot (we’re still dreaming about their trio of coffee flight), and the food menu is as carefully curated as it is delicious. The kids’ menu is a thoughtful stand out and it’s so fun, not just an afterthought. The kids options really appeal to little taste buds, and parents, you will approve! Take a better look at the food on their visual website menu. It certainly sealed the deal for us.

Inside, you’ll find a small lounge and play corner for toddlers, perfect for keeping the little cafĆ©-goers happy while parents and friends can enjoy a chat and get their caffeine in, or actually eat with both hands and no child on their lap.

Now, if you live near by or you’re in town on a Monday, make sure to stop by for Story Time!
Manna McLaren Vale runs Story Time every Monday at 11 am in their ā€œManna Studioā€ space. ±õ³Łā€™s a free 30-minute session, with stories and songs aimed at preschoolers (0–5 yrs). Families are welcome to come and go as they need and its just a relaxed, heartwarming way to start the week.

Beyond being a family-friendly cafĆ©, Manna also has a beautiful private function space at the back of the property and it’s perfect for birthday parties, celebrations, meetings or community events. The Manna Studio can even be set up with soft play for kids’ parties, making it one of the most versatile venues in the Vale.

All in all, Manna McLaren Vale has nailed the balance between style, coffee, and quality food for all ages. It’s family comfort and it’s truly a spot where everyone (big or small) leaves happy. Parties of 5+ are encouraged to book.

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company /barossa-valley-chocolate-company/ /barossa-valley-chocolate-company/#respond Sat, 01 Mar 2025 11:57:00 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=40679 The Barossa Valley Chocolate Company opened just before Easter 2019, and is a must-visit when you are in the area. Don’t plan on a quick visit just to buy some amazing chocolate though, there is so much on offer here you may as well book in for lunch at Benni’s Cafe and try it all! It’s a fabulous alternative to a traditional cellar door with so many initiatives that can be used as bargaining power for the kids!

BVCC Chocolate Shop

The huge vibrant chocolate store had our kids skipping from one end of the building to the other and is heaven for lovers of fine chocolate. If you can peel your eyes away from the vast selection available, you can watch the chocolatiers hard at work through viewing windows. You can find Ruby chocolate on the shelves, a unique chocolate that was only released in Australia in late 2018, and it is definitely worth a taste.

Benni’s Cafe & Gelato Bar

Benni’s CafĆ© is the real winner for hungry families. It’s a large and accessible cafe, with both indoor and outdoor seating and a great menu sure to please all members of the family. There are dishes to share, kids’ meals, burgers, pizzas, and a great selection of biscuits and pastries – even for the GF family members.

You can view the menu online .

The drinks menu is also extensive with a range of teas, coffee, milkshakes, beers, cider and wine. Offering plenty of fun twists, like their thick shakes made with house gelato and we tried a raspberry ‘spider’ which my kids delighted in and have never considered the concept of ice cream in a fizzy drink before.

A gelato bar greets you upon entry, with all of the delicious flavours made on-site, and free tastings available.

In fine weather you may choose to sit on the deck and enjoy a view of the vineyard and the fenced off lake like water feature. There is also a grassed grassed area for the kids to run off some energy.

Sorbet, Gelati and Chocolate Tasting

The Vineyard Road label have partnered with the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company and adjacent to Benni’s CafĆ© you will find their Barossa cellar door. In addition to the wine and food menu there are a number of tasting options including wine and chocolate pairing, beer and chocolate pairing and gelato and chocolate pairing self guided flights. This is the perfect experience for the kids if the adults want to experience one of the grown-up pairings! You can all be seated together and enjoy the moment!

Allow 30 minutes. Available Daily. $18

Chocolate Workshops at BVCC

Just when you thought that it couldn’t get any better than gelato, chocolate, wine tastings and a fantastic cafĆ© – it does! The Barossa Valley Chocolate Company has a dedicated space on-site to offer chocolate making classes, children’s birthday parties, and school holiday workshops, all at competitive and affordable prices. There are also a number of options for group experiences making it the perfect place to book an outing for grown-up birthdays, a girl’s day out, office lunch, or family celebration.

DIY Rocky Road Workshop

One of our favourite things to do at Barossa Valley Chocolate Company is their Rocky Road Experience. Get your hands dirty and indulge your senses while designing and customising your own 250g slab of delicious Rocky Road using up to 5 inclusions like house-made specialty honeycomb or peanut brittle, lollies, licorice, M&Ms, Mini Marshmallows, Waffle Cone, Pretzels, Oreo Crumb and Coconut. This is a fun (and delicious) activity the whole family can enjoy.
($25pp)

Events at BVCC

Be sure to check socials or visit the events tab of the BVCC website to take a look at upcoming events, particularly during school holidays with their Easter workshops and kids school holiday chocolate workshops.

Bring your blankets, order up some dinner from Benni’s Cafe, grab some house-made gelati and chocolate, and settle in for a family friendly evening at Barossa Outdoor Cinema

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company is fully accessible and there is plenty of room in-store and in Benni’s CafĆ© for manoeuvring prams or wheelchairs, including in the bathrooms. Rising Sun Hotel – Port Wakefield /rising-sun-hotel-port-wakefield/ /rising-sun-hotel-port-wakefield/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2025 13:14:44 +0000 /?p=157742 Here’s a pub you never knew you needed to find, but trust us, you really do! Families, ditch the crappy servo food and skip the greasy bakery line on your next road trip that takes you through Port Wakefield, because this hotel feed blows our socks off every single time. We actually wish it was our local.

Meander less than 1km off the main highway when travelling to or from Yorkes, or the North of South Australia, for this unexpectedly incredible pub food, friendly service and a really fun atmosphere. Find all of the country pub classics on the menu (yes including a little salad bar), and also a heap of gourmet dishes and Asian inspired treats too. So fresh and tasty! The kids menu has a big handful of options, and if you didn’t know, Port Wakefield sits at the top of St Vincent Gulf and is home to some of our states fabulous professional fishing, so you guessed it – there’s additionally some pretty great seafood on offer.

No doubt the menu changes seasonally or from time to time, but we enjoyed eight choices on the kids menu (priced between $10 and $13 which includes a juice or soft drink) plus a ripper option to add a side of fruit or veg sticks for just $2. That’s how you welcome families folks!

On our most recent visit, in addition to our excellent kids meals, we enjoyed eating loaded nachos, a Vietnamese noodle bowl with sticky Asian pork belly, shared bao buns, the best buffalo wings we have ever experienced (with blue cheese sauce and celery of course) and a divine laksa. See – told you; unexpected, fresh and soooo bloody tasty. This food is prepared and presented with passion, skill and pride. Love that.

Indoors you’ll find a traditional country pub front bar and also cosy tables for dining. The real magic though? Out the back. Now, we travel with our dog, a lazy old gold lab ‘Ivy’ and she also rates this place, with it’s large enclosed back lawn, plentiful water bowls and rustic beer garden. It’s picture perfect and every thing that kids need for a road trip break with swings, a sandpit, boat, highly decorated shipping container cubby / play shop counter and more.

Great (nope, excellent) food, a perfect rest stop, happy kids, happy dog and a fun and quirky alfresco area and garden with umbrellas, festoon lights and styling that’s telling of the towns port history and fishing industry. Nothing boring about it.

Bookings are appreciated, phone ahead while you are on the road even.

Lastly, I don’t care what any one says, family owned and run pubs will always have the best service and attention to detail. This is fabulous country hospitality at its best.

Give it a go next time you are passing through. We usually time our return trips home to 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ around meal time just so as we can stop, because lets face it after a week or weekend away, there’s no food in the fridge at home. Who knew Port Wakefield had so much more to offer than just fuel! Well, we did actually and we can’t hold out on you any longer.

From a velvety milk stout to a hazy IPA (my personal fave), they’ve even managed to make a pale ale we actually enjoy – the Wanna Pale at 4.5% is fab! For those taking it easy, there’s a session ale and a heap of zero-alcohol options, like the fun and fizzy Mischief Brews Sodas, as well as good ol’ Bickford’s and juice boxes for the kids. Non-beer drinkers, don’t fret: their SA spirits range is equally impressive, featuring local gems like Coffin Bay Spirits, EP & West Coast Distilling Co. gins, plus a wine list that’ll make any vino lover smile. Basically, they’ve got everyone covered and for that, we say CHEERS!

Let’s talk about the food because, wow, this menu is next level. When it comes to brewery eats, we love something light and shareable, and Jump Ship’s tapas-style offerings deliver in spades. Worth noting too, it’s completely gluten free. Highlights include:

  • Pita Bread with Daily Dips: The presentation alone is enough to make you hesitate before digging in, but don’t hold back! Hummus + olive oil, beetroot, roasted beets + feta, and basil pesto with that scrumptious toast – it’s sensational.
  • Fried JalapeƱo Bites: As a sucker for spice, these were a must-try and definitely delivered.
  • Squid Tacos: Generously portioned with three per serve, these were a hit.
  • Prawn and Chorizo Flatbread: A tasty and satisfying combo.
  • Torn Kebab: Lovely flavours, worth a try!
  • Nachos: We chose beef and weren’t disappointed.

For the kids, the menu’s got options that’ll please even the pickiest eaters. Think Nachos (choose chicken, beef, jackfruit, or plain cheese), Crumbed Chicken and Chips, Calamari and Chips, or Tacos. Plus, they can colour on the back of the menu or write letters to Santa (if you’re visiting around Christmas time, like we did!). Bonus points to Jump Ship for actually having sharp pencils, a rare but much-appreciated touch.

The kids’ area at Jump Ship Brewing is a total winner! ±õ³Łā€™s thoughtfully designed with soft play, building blocks, the cutest little tea set, and a kids’ table and chairs. Located in a corner, the space keeps the little ones entertained and out of the way, but still within sight – just how we parents like it. As for the rest of the brewery, the airy, bright space is beautifully decorated with plenty of tables, wine barrels, and room to move, so you’ll never feel cramped. There’s plenty of highchairs and heaps of room for prams, plus the uni-sex bathrooms have baby change facilities. For the adults, there’s a dartboard and a pool table, perfect for a bit of friendly competition while catching up with friends or family.

Although Port Lincoln is a looooong way from home for us (it’s actually only a 50 minute flight from 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½), we’ll definitely be jumping ship again for this gem. We know you’ll love it too, so keep it on your radar when visiting the Eyre Peninsula.
