Belair National Park’s much-loved adventure playground is set for a major refresh, with work on stage one of the upgrade expected to begin in late August 2025 and wrap up by November. This initial phase will see updated play equipment designed to enhance the experience for young adventurers, while keeping the playground open and accessible during construction.

Importantly for long-time visitors, the iconic concrete tunnels and the large wooden fort—both favourites for generations—will remain untouched during this stage. However, future upgrades will focus on these much-loved structures. The tunnels, which are aging and no longer meet safety standards, will be completely replaced in a way that retains their nostalgic charm. The wooden fort will also be upgraded to ensure it’s safer and more accessible, while still staying true to its original character.

The revamp is part of a broader effort to make Belair National Park even more family-friendly, ensuring it continues to be a top destination for nature play and outdoor fun. With a strong focus on safety, accessibility, and preserving the park’s natural beauty, this upgrade is one to watch!

Oaktree Adventure Playground /oak-tree-adventure-playground/ /oak-tree-adventure-playground/#respond Tue, 01 Jul 2025 04:09:16 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=26872 Find it at: Minda Farm Reserve. Between Symon Crescent and Gartrell Boulevard Craigburn Farm

Oak Tree Adventure Playground at Blackwood Park is part of a larger X-Terrain Park that includes an incredible running/walking/riding trail, creek, lake and the epic Blackwood Treetop Playground

There are fitness circuits and exercise stations around the trail, but it’s nice just to relax in the beautiful landscape too!

My kids were very excited when we arrived at the playground as there were literally about 20 kangaroos bouncing around! As it was cold and wet, there were also some cute ducks having a pretty fun time! The playground itself follows the “nature play” trend and boasts wooden and rock structures for climbing and balancing.

The small creek that runs near the playground was cute, but I’m not sure how full it gets during the year. There is a lake nearby though.

Streetside parking is available, and there may be more appropriate parking once further development is completed.

The playground was a little difficult to locate, as it’s not really along a main stretch, but I winged it and drove around without an address and still found it! But it’s probably best to have some directions… so… it’s in the gully reserve between Gartrell Boulevard, Fergusson Avenue and Meridian. You can enter from Symon Crescent in Meridian. Google Maps are yet to catch up with all the developments at Blackwood Park, so be aware that Google Maps may not have the clearest directions for you either!

Pros:

  • Benches next to playground
  • Beautiful natural space
  • Kangaroos and ducks around in the local bushland
  • Good mix of activities for toddlers through to ages 6 or 7
  • A cool climbing rock (for ages 3-5 probably)
  • Links to the trail where you can walk through the area. There are multiple paths to try depending on age, ability and mode of transport (foot, bike or pram… perhaps all if you are like us!).
  • For a full map of the trails click:

Cons:

  • No toilets
  • It isn’t fenced (although it’s not directly on the street and is nice and open so it’s easy to see where your children are)
  • No swings, slides or monkey bars (this may be a pro for some of you!
  • Shade from trees, but not over the actual playground

GT Fisher Nature Playground, Victor Harbor /gt-fisher-playground-victor-harbor/ /gt-fisher-playground-victor-harbor/#respond Wed, 04 Jun 2025 10:57:21 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=8944
Find it at: Warland Reserve, Victor Harbor

The redeveloped GT Fisher Playground in Victor Harbor opened in July 2019 and is located where the old train playground was, right near the horse trams, this nature playground will have the kids smiling all around.

What an amazing interactive, quirky playspace the people of Victor Harbor have delivered. Based around the local community feedback and ideas the design and theme of this nature playground was to keep the strong ties of Victor Harbor. Indeed they have certainly managed to do this. These include the use of the granite, the inclusion of an island with causeway, a fisherman shack and railway inspired elements. They have hit the mark and created an amazing play space designed for all abilities and lots of inclusive play areas.

We love how the play area caters for a variety of ages and certainly has something for everyone offering a range of adventures. For the older kids there are lots of climbing options and heaps of funky elements, sculptures and the like that inquisitive eyes will appreciate.
For younger kids there’s lots of rocks and logs to balance on, ropes to climb and slides for all sizes.

Classic Carriage Drives /classic-carriage-drives/ /classic-carriage-drives/#comments Sun, 15 Dec 2024 03:59:36 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=22274 Step back in time on a trip down memory lane with this relaxed, unique family experience.

After a leisurely drive to Montacute in the 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ Hills, our carriage awaited us by a charming old stone building on Institute Road, creating a picturesque scene that set the tone for the entire journey. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Libby, her canine sidekick, Eddie, and the most beautifully natured horse, Stella – a delightful trio indeed! Our youngest passenger, at age of four, was initially a little nervous. However, Libby’s friendly manner and casual conversation instantly put her at ease. As we made ourselves comfortable, we meandered along a quiet road, taking in the stunning views of rolling hills, fruit trees, working farms, and orchards, all while enjoying the sweet rhythm of Stella’s clip-clopping hooves. Keep an eye out for wildlife, from kangaroos to koalas snoozing above in gum trees. The kids, in particular, loved their special turn “driving” up front, eagerly asking Libby questions about Stella and the passing scenery.

The 45-minute ride was the perfect amount of time, although, if we had traded the kids for a bottle of champagne, we might’ve just extended the adventure all day long! Now, that’s a tempting thought. šŸ˜‰

To extend our already wonderful experience, Libby offered a picture-perfect picnic setup near the Hall after the ride. Think cushions, throw rugs, and low pallets dressed in tablecloths, setting a boho chic vibe that was nothing short of perfection. Armed with our own picnic goodies, we seized the moment for some Instagram-worthy shots before Libby graciously left us to enjoy what can only be described as a “peaceful” picnic. Well, as peaceful as a picnic can be with four energetic kids in tow! The open space provided the perfect playground for the little ones to burn off some steam, complete with hills to roll down and flower fields to explore. A post-carriage picnic? Now, that’s how you top off a magical day!

The costs $180 per 45 minute carriage ride and seats 6 adult passengersĀ (or equivalent with children). To add a vintage picnic to your day, it’s an extra $100 for 2, $120 for 4 or $140 for up to 12 but we think it’s absolutely worthwhile. And that’s not all, Libby also offers Unicorn Tea Parties, which look as dreamy as they sound, a experience plus carriage hire for such as weddings and more. With gift vouchers also available to purchase, we think this would make the ultimate gift (hint hint)!

Classic Carriage Drives has crafted a truly special experience that we wholeheartedly recommend to families seeking a unique and memorable adventure and everlasting memories!

Classic Carriage Drives runs 7 days a week (by booking only).

We’ve set the timer for when she’s brushing her teeth, and we’ve even set up a countdown for bedtime…….and it WORKED!?! 5 minutes was up and off to bed she went. #miraclewatch

VTech Marble Rush – Corkscrew Challenge

There is something oddly satisfying about a marble run, which might explain why they are such a popular evergreen toy! The VTech Marble Rush – Corkscrew Challenge is an incredibly versatile toy which combines a tech element (one of the pieces has some lights and noises to really add a nice effect to the finished build) with the mental challenge to follow instructions and build a working marble run. We loved so much about this, including the brightly coloured instructions providing very clear instructions on how to complete the build. The pieces are solid and really top notch quality, being really easy for even little fingers to put it together. The instructions comes with 3 designs, increasing in size and complexity, with the easiest design a really simple little run that our 2 year old absolutely loved to play with (under supervision…the little marbles push this one to the 4+ category)

Once you have finished the 3 builds, they have also included plenty of links to online sources for more plans and really, this is proper imagination play intended to allow kids to build their own marble runs. Buy more kits, make it massive and enjoy the ride!

RRP $79

VTech Turbo Force Race Track

Our kids have loved the new Turbo Force Racers, which is a really cool concept of remote control car meets scalectrix for younger kids. The kids wear the wristband on their wrist, which doubles as a charging dock as well as a remote control for the mini race cars. Its a cool concept and allows two kids to race their cars against each other. With multiple different track designs, you can change things up to try a few track options. A really cool part about the Turbo Force Racers are that they have a ā€˜turbo change’ boost – achievable by vigorously shaking the wristband until the turbo is engaged! This gives the race car a boost to get in front of other cars to win the race! Perfect for kids aged 2-9 years old, the Vtech Turbo Force Race Track is a sure hit with our 5 and 7 years olds and their friends

Available at Big W and other good toy stores.

Leapfrog Range

The Counting Hoops Basketball Stand is the perfect introduction to ball sports, with a fabulous VTech spin. The stand will grow with your little one (this starts at the 3yo mark and starts at 1075mm and extends to 1400mm)

The electronic backboard has a number of game modes with lights and sounds adding to the game play. Play in one player or multi player mode, then follow the instructions for the different game modes. Try them all and have a ball (pun intended). Our 4yo and 10yo loved the indoor game play this added to the kids games room and with sturdy components this one will last!

Leapfrog Magic Adventures Microscope

Calling all aspiring David Attenborough’s…

Kids are curious by nature and seem to want to know everything about the world around them. And, as parents, we try to encourage and nurture their inquisitive little minds; which is why this educational toy is a winner for both adults and kids alike.

Packed with features including games, video content, images, fun facts and challenges, this is far more than *just* a microscope. Use the smart slides to cover topics such as; flowers, nature, insects, micro animals and more. There’s also two reusaeable slides allowing you to find and add your own samples/ specimens to view up close. Very cool!

The built in LCD screen is amazing. It’s the perfect size for small hands and it’s relatively easy to use. (once you get the hang of it)

This is a great little gift for the budding scientist!
RRP $129

Our 7 year old LOVES her LeapPods Max headphones and I love that she can listen to music, stories and relaxations without having to resort to YouTube.

They came with a range of modes, including Dance Party, Instrumentals, Adventure, Challenges and more. So no matter where you are or what mood your kid is in, there is a mode to suit! These are perfect for on the go, in the car or to take when you want a bit of adult coversation without the kids overhearing or interupting. They are rechargable via USB, so there’s no need to worry about batteries.

It also has a Bluetooth setting so they can listen to music or podcasts via a device, but we’ve found that the built in modes and music have been plenty for now!

RRP $29

Honestly one of the best toys I’ve reviewed the Leapfrog On-the-Go Story Pal has been used every night since we got it. If you’re an interstate Nan or Grandpa, have a FIFO parent in the house, a favourite Aunty who lives far away or just know a story loving kid this is the gift for you. It comes pre loaded with 30 stories, poems, songs and lullabies BUT the best part is that you can also voice record our own stories or songs. Nanna is here reading and recording Miss 3’s favourite book so she can listen to it every night when our interstate Nanna goes back home (sob)

Harold and Cynthia Anderson Reserve Playground /harold-cynthia-anderson-reserve/ /harold-cynthia-anderson-reserve/#respond Wed, 02 Oct 2024 10:12:59 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=23208 This playground has been recently upgraded and includes some great new features!

  • Flying fox (ideal for 3+, it has a bit of a jolt at the end, so make sure little hands can hold on)
  • Baby and toddler swings, plus “big kids” swing and swinging basket
  • 2 playground structures, one aimed more at 1-3 year olds and one for 3+
  • A ‘spinning wheel’ with 3 grip bars that the kids spent AGES on. A big hit!

Key features we also liked were…

  • Bike path running from Glenelg (or further south if you’re keen!) to Henley (or further north if you’re very fit!)
  • Lots of space to park
  • Plenty of grass to enjoy a picnic upon and some benches to rest, breast feed etc.
  • Easy access directly to beautiful West beach

Things to note:

  • The toilets are located a short walk from the playground, which is something to think about if you have multiple children or a toilet training toddler who needs to go “NOW!”
  • Make sure you pack hats as there’s minimal shade over the flying fox, swings and grassy area
