I swear, these are the happiest Donkey in the world. We visited as a multi-generational family, kids, parents, Grandma and Grandpa, and it was one of the best hands on animal experiences we’ve ever done.

Sessions run in small, intimate groups, creating a calm, unhurried environment to really enjoy these beautiful animals. In the two-hour Donkey Discovery experience, you’re immersed in a herd of loving donkeys, with an experience designed to create meaningful connections and provide moments you’ll treasure long after you leave. This would make an exceptional and special gift.

Unlike some animal encounters we have participated in where interaction is limited, this is a hands-on experience where the donkeys genuinely enjoy human company. You are encouraged to pat, brush and cuddle the donkeys (yep, like actual big around the neck hugs….just try and pry me off) all while learning about their care and wellbeing. Of course there are some rules like being mindful not to walk directly behind the animals, and like any animal encounter, kids need to be supervised and capable of maintaining a certain level of composure, so as not to startle them with running or quick/loud unexpected movements.

Animal welfare is at the heart of everything they do here, and it shows, these are deeply loved, well-cared-for, HAPPY donkeys who are relaxed, curious and comfortable around families. Hearing how Donkey Discovery has evolved, and learning about each donkey’s personality, adds a beautiful educational layer to the experience; and man do they ever have their own hilarious individual personalities. The kids loved hearing about these and witnessing it. They left feeling like they really knew the animals and had connected with them, it’s very special.

Some other highlights for all of us were walking with the donkeys, watching them play and interact with each other and also the opportunity to snap the cutest photos of them wearing headbands (yes, they genuinely seemed to love it!) Then there was Sunny, a three-week-old baby donkey, who completely stole our hearts. Fluffy, fuzzy and impossibly cute, Sunny was a huge hit and made this 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ Hills animal experience feel even more unforgettable.

The two-hour session finishes with a delicious morning or afternoon tea, perfect for families. Expect warm scones, tea and coffee, and incredible homemade biscuits (a mix of ANZAC and Turkish apricot flavours) fittingly named Gallipoli biscuits.

The cost is: Adults $110, Kids (2–14 years) $55 and private family sessions and special event appearances can be arranged and are charged accordingly, on application and subject to availability. An investment well worth every cent.

To book this epic animal experience in South Australia, visit and don’t forget to wear enclosed footwear for walking alongside the donkeys

Wilbur’s Wildlife – Native Animal Encounter Birthday Parties /wilburs-wildlife-native-animal-encounter-birthday-parties/ /wilburs-wildlife-native-animal-encounter-birthday-parties/#respond Tue, 15 Jul 2025 05:48:00 +0000 /?p=141963 Wilbur’s Wildlife is the up-close native animal experience that comes to you. They will bring along 8-10 of their friendly native animals for a hands-on experience where your child and their friends will get to pat and hold the animals.

Their group of animal ambassadors include snakes, lizards, frogs, insects and possums among others.

The birthday child will become a junior ranger helping to introduce their friends to the animals and getting the most opportunities for holds and hands-on interaction.

As a mobile operation Wilbur’s Wildlife can come to you across South Australia at a venue which is convenient for you. They can also provide the presentation at a childcare centre or school which the child attends.

Wilbur’s Wildlife birthday parties are $375 for the one-hour presentation. Their experiences can either be one-on-one for the birthday child or with up to 30 of their friends.

The up-close native animal encounters provided by Wilbur’s Wildlife are not just for birthday parties. They also visit schools, kindergartens, aged care homes and events.

*All Wilbur’s Wildlife birthday parties are covered by a set of terms and condition’s available on the Wilbur’s Wildlife website. Any animal’s pictured or listed are indicative of their collection and are not guaranteed to appear at your party.

Harry’s Wildly Perfect Seventh Birthday Bash

When it comes to throwing the perfect party, sometimes the stars align – or in our case, the animals do! For Harry’s seventh birthday, we had 34 excited kids, and a playground that needed just a little something extra. Enter: Wilbur’s Wildlife, our party’s saving grace and the best thing to slither into Harry’s birthday plans.

Harry wanted to invite half his class, his soccer team, and his footy team – so, basically, everyone! We picked Fairbanks Drive Reserve in Paralowie as the perfect spot to keep the chaos contained. But with so many kids, and our little ones being way too cool for Pass the Parcel and Pin the Tail on the Donkey, we were scratching our heads on how to keep them entertained.

Cale and his team brought the party to life with their amazing lineup of animal guests. Harry and his mates were thrilled to meet Pepe the Magnificent Tree Frog, Maurice the Sand Goanna, Fidget the Marbled Velvet Gecko, and Mr. Smiles the Shingleback Lizard. The snakes, Olivia the Woma Python and Bob the Black Headed Python, had the kids excited, especially since many had never had the chance to touch a snake before. Meanwhile, Margot the Ringtail Possum and Harold the Sugar Glider brought a delightful touch of sweetness, making the day even more special with their adorable antics. With so many kids, you’d think it would be a bit of a zoo, but Cale got them all sitting quietly in a circle, just like they do at school. Harry, the birthday star, got the first chance to hold each critter, his face lighting up with every slimy, scaly, and furry friend. Then, Cale brought the animals around to the rest of the kids, letting everyone have a chance to say hello and give a gentle pat.

The animals were all super friendly and Cale always prioritised the animals’ comfort, making sure they were put back in their enclosures whenever they needed a break. After circle time, where Cale shared lots of interesting facts about the animals and patiently answered thousands of questions like ā€œHow old is he?ā€ and ā€œHow big do they grow?ā€, some of the kids ran off to kick the soccer ball, while others stayed behind for a more personal experience. They got to choose their favourite animals to hold, enjoying a special moment up close with these incredible creatures. The parents also loved it. They found it refreshing and enjoyed seeing their children interact with the animals in such a unique and hands-on way. Some even joined in the experience.

The package was great value for money, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Wilbur’s Wildlife to anyone. If you’re looking for a party with a bit of ā€œwildā€ excitement, look no further!

Redwing Farm, Moonta, Yorke Peninsula /redwing-farmstay-accomodation-moonta-yorke-peninsula/ /redwing-farmstay-accomodation-moonta-yorke-peninsula/#respond Mon, 02 Jun 2025 01:43:00 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=19561 Waking up to a giant black-and-white cow waiting at the fence while you sip your morning cuppa might not be everyone’s idea of a dream holiday…. but for us, it was pretty perfect. Redwing Farm, owned and run by Nicola and Damien Adams, is a 460-acre working property just outside Moonta on the stunning Yorke Peninsula. If you’re after a getaway that’s wholesome, hands-on, and full of fresh air and animal encounters, this place is well worth a spot on your list.

Where To Stay

We stayed in The Barn, one of four unique accommodation options on the farm. The others include Florence the Bus (aka Flo), which is every bit as stylish as you’d hope, and the cosy Shearers Quarters. Little Patty, a renovated 1950s caravan that’s utterly charming and budget-friendly, is unfortunately out of action at the moment but we hope to see her back soon! With four very different spots available (usually!), Redwing Farm is perfect for larger groups or extended families who want to stay close but still enjoy their own space. It’s a popular pick during school holidays, so if you’re planning a visit, we’d recommend booking early to avoid missing out.

Redwing isn’t just great for holidays, it also makes a brilliant venue for country weddings or special celebrations. The Shed, their purpose-built event space, combines indoor and outdoor areas, full DIY flexibility, and photo-ready views across the gardens and farmland. Whether you’re imagining food trucks, long tables, or rustic charm under festoon lights, it’s got the vibe.

The Barn itself was beautiful – filled with natural light, boasting high ceilings, and oozing rustic charm. It had everything we needed: a combustion heater that made chilly nights feel extra snug, a corner spa bath perfect for soaking tired legs and washing off a day on the farm, a coffee machine (yes, please!), a BBQ, a fully equipped kitchen, and super comfy beds with all linen and towels provided.

Our favourite spot? The back patio overlooking the sheep paddock. Though the landscape was dry during our visit (thanks to a tough season), it was still amazing. Every morning we found ourselves surrounded by friendly animals stopping by to say hello – including our absolute favourite, Patches, a huge black-and-white cow who made a daily visit to the fence and left us covered in slobbery affection.

Farm Life with Kids

This is a real, working farm so you’ll hear the animals, smell the animals, and probably get just a wee bit dirty. And the kids… they’ll absolutely love it, ours certainly did!

Our two were in their element. Feeding animals, giving out pats wherever they were welcome, and roaming the paddocks without a care in the world. One of the funniest moments was the piglets making a run for it and trotting after the kids like they were part of the gang. They thought it was hilarious and would’ve happily spent the whole day with their new farmyard entourage. They even asked to take not one, but all of them home.

And then there were the donkeys – Lily, Menindie, and Daisy. They were total sweethearts and loved a good scratch. We were also lucky enough to visit during lambing season, which meant baby lambs absolutely everywhere. We actually got to witness an ewe give birth right in front of us. Not something you see every day, and such a special memory.

Because of all the new lambs, McGee and Maxi (the owners’ dogs) weren’t allowed to roam the farm like they usually do – but we did get to meet them and give them some well-deserved pats.

Meet the Animals

Some of the friendly faces you’ll likely encounter

  • 3 lovable donkeys (very photogenic)
  • McGee (a gorgeous Border Collie) & Maxi (the Golden Retriever)
  • A whole mob of sheep… and lambs galore
  • Pigs and piglets (with big personalities)
  • Friendly goats
  • 3 cows: Patches, Ranga and Caesar
  • Chickens, ducks, geese, and a very proud rooster
  • An alpaca who thinks he’s a sheep

We spent hours just wandering around meeting everyone. There are signs around the paddocks to help you figure out who’s who, and the kids loved reading the fun facts and animal names.

Things to Do on the Farm

There’s so much more to Redwing than just the animals (although they are the stars of the show). The kids had a blast:

  • Climbing the hay bale maze (and turning it into a full-blown game of hide-and-seek)
  • Borrowing bikes from the bike shed
  • Playing giant checkers (once someone explains the rules to the kids…)
  • Hunting for fairies on the ā€˜Find the Fairies’ trail
  • Visiting the farm library – a sweet converted fridge stocked with books, DVDs, and games
  • Dropping a coin in the wishing well
  • Exploring the veggie patch, windmills and reading the little history signs dotted around the property

It’s the kind of place where you really don’t need to leave. We spent two full days exploring and still didn’t run out of things to do.

Food, Fire Pits & Family Feels

We made dinner easy: a classic BBQ one night and a relaxed grazing board the next (aka: every snack from the fridge on a platter). There’s a lovely fire pit outside for marshmallow toasting and if you’re lucky enough to get a clear night, the stars are absolutely next level. Sunsets were also a total highlight too so bring your camera.

If you do feel like venturing out, Sunny Hill Distillery is a short drive and well worth a visit (hello, gin tasting!). And we also made a trip into Wallaroo to visit Bond Store, a favourite of ours with restaurant-quality food and great beer. But honestly, we weren’t fussed about leaving the farm – we took our own food and it had everything we needed.

Final Thoughts

We left dusty, happy, and already checking the calendar for when we could come back. Redwing Farm is a must for any family looking for a unique, memory-filled escape, full of fresh air, animal encounters, and good old-fashioned country charm.

Whether you’re chasing animal cuddles, a change of pace, or just a few days away from the noise (well, city noise – you’ll still get your fair share of moos and baas), Redwing Farm delivers. We give it a full five stars and maybe a piglet or two, if you’re lucky.

Cuddle a Cow – The Farm, Clarendon /cuddle-a-cow-the-farm-clarendon/ /cuddle-a-cow-the-farm-clarendon/#respond Wed, 07 May 2025 06:52:21 +0000 /?p=167345 Looking for something udderly adorable to do with the kids (or without, we’re not judging)? Just 40 minutes from 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½, nestled in the rolling hills of Clarendon, you’ll find one of the most wholesome and unforgettable experiences going around – Cuddle a Cow at The Farm, Clarendon.

We recently popped in for a visit, and this is as real as it gets. Proper country vibes with dirt underfoot, fresh air, and yep… a bit of cow poo too! But don’t let that put you off, the Highland cows are absolutely beautiful. With their gentle nature, big curious eyes, and those iconic fringes, it’s no wonder everyone falls in love with them.

Run by the absolutely lovely Emma and her husband Ryan — both down-to-earth country folk with a young family of their own, this is a true passion project. Their love for the land, animals, and regenerative farming shines through in everything they do, and the private sessions are personal, warm, and so, so special.

The ā€˜Cuddle a Cow’ experience is tailored just for your group (up to six people), and whether you’re brushing, feeding, or just hanging out with these majestic creatures, you’ll quickly see each one has its own quirky personality. Sessions run for around 45–60 minutes (depending on the cows’ moods and we respect that), and you can choose whether or not to include a professional photoshoot. If you’re after Insta-worthy snaps of your cow-cuddling adventures, the photography package is 100% worth it. But if you’re just there for the love and fluff, the non-photo option still gives you all the cow time without the added cost.

This is a private, hands-on experience that’s truly unlike anything else and a great reminder to slow down, breathe in that fresh air, and connect with nature (and some very photogenic highland cows).

Know before you go:
šŸ‘Øā€šŸ‘©ā€šŸ‘§ā€šŸ‘¦ Suitable for all ages (yes, even babies and grandparents)
šŸ„ Private sessions only – max 6 people per group
šŸ“ø Optional professional photography available
šŸ’© Wear your farm boots – it’s a real paddock!
šŸ’š Sessions from $200 per group

Classic Carriage Drives – Unicorn Tea Party /classic-carriage-drives-unicorn-tea-party/ /classic-carriage-drives-unicorn-tea-party/#respond Mon, 14 Apr 2025 10:58:27 +0000 /?p=165311 Every little girl dreams of a magical birthday surrounded by unicorns (ok, maybe not every little girl, but mine certainly did), fairy tales, and a world of wonder. At in the stunning 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ Hills, that dream became a reality.

Libby has created the most whimsical experience on her Montacute property, where rustic charm, boho beauty, and a sprinkle of unicorn magic come together to make a celebration that feels straight out of a fairy tale. The setup is seriously something else – every detail, from the embroidered floral tablecloths to the dainty glassware and handpicked flowers (grown by Libby herself), feels like it belongs in the pages of a storybook. There’s a gorgeous little teepee tucked under the trees, where the kids can escape to play, share secrets, or just soak up the magic of it all. It’s rustic, it’s a bit boho, and it’s full of those extra touches that make you stop and say, ā€œwow.ā€

Indiana, the beautiful white horse who transforms into a real-life unicorn, is the true heart of the experience. With her calm, placid nature, she’s exactly what you’d want for little ones. The kids were completely captivated, brushing her, feeding her treats, and taking turns on led rides through the property. Some of the younger ones were understandably a little nervous at first, but Libby makes sure safety always comes first. She’s fantastic at fitting them with helmets, showing them how to saddle up, and ensuring everyone feels comfortable and confident before the ride. Oh, and a quick tip: enclosed shoes are a must, so make sure the party guests come prepared for all the fun!

The food is perfect for grazing, which is always a win with kids. It’s not a full meal, but a beautifully presented spread that’s just right for snacking throughout the party. You’re more than welcome to bring along extra food or drinks if you’d like, which makes it really easy to tailor the day to your own little party crew. We’ve said it already, but the attention to detail truly is something else – heart-shaped fruit, dainty marshmallows arranged on a gorgeous Ferris wheel-style stand, and of course, the tic toc teacup biscuits (honestly, adorable). Elegant glassware and jugs of water were placed on the table too, each tied with soft ribbon for every guest. It’s all so thoughtfully styled, totally delicious, and exactly what you’d expect from a magical unicorn party.

The experience lasts for 1.5 hours, giving plenty of time for the children to interact with Indiana, enjoy the tea party, and explore the magical grounds. This experience is limited to a small group, ensuring a personal, intimate atmosphere where everyone can truly enjoy the magic. And if you fall in love with the place like we did, Classic Carriage Drives also offer photo shoots, vintage teas, scenic valley rides, even weddings and other special occasions. Read more about what they offer here.

If you’re after a birthday celebration that’s whimsical, magical, and oh-so-memorable, Classic Carriage Drives delivers on every point. It’s the kind of party both kids and grown-ups will be talking about long after the cake’s been eaten. In fact, I’m seriously considering having my 42nd birthday with Classic Carriage Drives. Who says unicorn parties are just for kids?

After a comfy nights sleep and breakfast at KOOMO Restaurant we made our way to Glenelg to meet our tour guide, Kim who provided us with all the necessary crabbing gear. From there, we made our way to the end of the jetty, where Kim patiently showed the kids how to bait the nets and lower them into the water. He was absolutely fantastic with the children—getting down on their level, explaining everything in an engaging, age-appropriate way, and making the entire experience so much fun.

While catching a crab isn’t guaranteed, the tasting experience is! After our crabbing adventure, we headed to Sammy’s on the Marina, where the staff were incredibly welcoming. The tasting experience was beautifully presented and tasted exceptional—a real treat for seafood lovers. Whether or not you manage to catch your own crab, this part of the experience ensures that everyone gets to enjoy a delicious, fresh seafood dish.

Meet 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ Zoo’s New Panda Duo: Xing Qiu & Yi Lan

Xing Qiu (shing chee-yull) and Yi Lan (ee-lun) are settling into their new home at 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ Zoo’s Bamboo Forest, since arriving on 21 January 2025!

Xing Qiu, a three-year-old male, is a handsome guy with a chill yet playful vibe. His name means “Star Autumn,” a nod to the twinkling sky on the night he was born. Yi Lan, also three, is a little ball of energy with a name that means “idly blissful”—fitting for such a fun-loving panda!

Handpicked in collaboration with the Zoos Chinese conservation partners, these two are not just here to steal hearts—they’re also a future breeding pair, bringing fresh hope for panda conservation.

Go and say hi to Xing Qiu and Yi Lan—you’ll find that this duo are much more lively and active in the cooler weather, early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

If you haven’t been to 91¹ū¶³“«Ć½ Zoo in a while, you might be surprised by how much has changed. From the new Penguin Bay to the Red Panda Runway and Tamarins on the Run tunnels, the primate boardwalk where you can sit for hours watching the siamang and gibbons swing and play above your head to the cheeky meerkats and of course our two famous Pandas – you won’t know where tolook first!

The zoo is home to over 250 different species of native and exotic animals including their famous Giant Pandas Wang Wang and Fu Ni and newest arrivals – three adorable Sumatran Tiger cubs! Sisters Marni and Susu and brother Ketambe have been prowling, pouncing and playing together since their debut in April 2023!

Set aside a few hours or a whole day of exploring, discovery and fun with plenty of opportunities to get up close to the animals. It can be a long day of walking and sightseeing so make sure you pack extra snacks, water and sunscreen as you make your way around the jungle-like gardens.

The lovely botanic setting means lots of shady areas and perfect for laying out a blanket for a picnic. Bring your own lunch, or grab a range of tasty treats, snacks, drinks and hot meals at the onsite cafes.

If you want to get closer to some of your favourite animals, there are some incredible experiences available for loved ones of all ages. Hand feed a giraffe, go behind the scenes to feed the adorable Yellow-footed Rock-wallabies, mingle with meerkats and even inspect an insect (a great one for the under 6s). Check out the range of experiences online here.

Relaxed Zoo Mornings For Inclusive Experiences

During a Relaxed Zoo Morning experience, the zoo’s gates open earlier with reduced human noises on site to ensure a quieter and calmer environment for the autism and autistic community.

The experience is held quarterly on the third Saturday morning of month, and allows guests one and half hours to explore the zoo at their own pace before opening to the general public.

The Relaxed Zoo Mornings program is part of Zoos SA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) charter, which aims to create an environment of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusiveness.
