For those who grew up in 91ý, you’d probably have been out St Kilda Adventure Playground when you were a kid, but have you been back since 2015?

It’s got all the awesome stuff that I remember from my childhood, and more… and green grass, less dust, water, shade and well, it’s just BIGGER AND BETTER than I remember too!

St Kilda’s huge makeover was completed in 2015 with a brand new metal/mesh 3 storey castle on one hill complete with 3 metal slides a completely renovated ‘Volcano’ with 4 slides on the other hill and in between a whole range of swings, slides, flying foxes, climbing nets and equipment toddlers right up to teenagers will enjoy

Highlights

  • The HUGE old school metal slide from my childhood is still there, but there are also a bunch of other new metal slides now too – remember to bring your own slippery blanket, hessian sack or similar to slide on if you’re a thrill seeker
  • 1 big BIG flying fox for the older kids, and one smaller one perfect for primary kids. The big one is epic…..possibly the best one in S.A?
  • A completely new metal castle (where the old wooden one used to be) on top of the hill looking out across the whole playground which has a bunch of slides of various heights.
  • A maze
  • Liberty swing and a wheelchair accessible slide,
  • Really big ‘little kids’ play structure with multiple slides, steps, ramps, naughts & crosses,
  • Sandpit diggers,
  • The big old wooden pirate ship down on the water is still there, that the kids can climb into and on (unfortunately this is closed for repair due to damage in December 2021)
  • A whole range of swings of all sizes
  • Shade structures, grassed areas, tree planting, mulched garden beds, garbage bins, water fountain, BBQs, toilets and some lighting!
  • The tram stop is now open right at the Playground and I believe the trams will now run again on weekends and holidays from the nearby tram museum.
  • There is a kiosk about 500m away if you need food, drinks and icecreams, plus PLENTY of space for picnics.

We’ll let the photos do the rest of the talking – in short though:  Take the kids, young and old, it’s great!

And now join the free, self-guided Sand Pirates of St Kilda scavenger hunt adventure running 22 January to 30 April 2026 . Follow clues around St Kilda, collect letters at each stop and uncover the secret pirate code along the way.

Where to pick up your activity pack
• Collect your scavenger hunt activity card from any City of Salisbury library, hub or community centre.
• Cards are also available at St Kilda Hotel and St Kilda Tackle ‘n’ Tucker before you start the hunt.

Scavenger hunt details
• Free and self-paced — start and finish whenever it suits your day.
• Follow clues at local landmarks, parks and businesses to collect letters.
• Vouchers attached to your card can be redeemed at participating stops for rewards.
• Once you’ve collected all the letters, unscramble them to solve the final riddle.

Bonython Park Playground /bonython-park/ /bonython-park/#respond Sat, 20 Sep 2025 06:48:47 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=26 Find it at: Port Rd, 91ý

What a beautiful playground for kids of all ages! Renovated back in late 2012, the Bonython Park Playground has a some very cool features not found in the typical suburban park. Some of the best equipment includes two 25m flying fox lines fun for kids of all ages and an extensive water play area complete with pumps, gates and a watermill. Kids love playing and experimenting with water and this is a safe and interactive water zone to suits kids as young as 1, while still entertaining the older ones.

The huge ‘mouse wheel’ can accommodate numerous energetic kids, there is a variety of swings and we love the wheelchair accessible carousel, water play troughs, communication boards and a nest swing that make this park a good one for kids of all ages and abilities. You also have to love the shade thrown by beautiful big old gum trees in this park.

The playground backs onto a well kept oval for plenty of open space and a kit of the ball or fly of the kite and there are both toilet and BBQ facilities here.

Perhaps the star of the show (for parents) is Cafe Bonython, located directly at the playground. It’s got fabulous coffee, indoor play and so many treats and initiatives for the kids. We would happily brunch or lunch here any day of the week, in fact it is one of our absolute favourite places to eat with the kids. They even do Birthday Parties

Worth noting, this one is not a fenced playground an that it is situated on linear path and the Torrens River. It’s a fair distance however there are also some duck ponds on the other side of the park, so its just a reminder to keep your eyes on the little people.

To top off a great park, you will see city trains cross a small river bridge a very short walk away and you are situated under the flight path so it makes for some excellent plane spotting, depending what direction the air traffic are taking off / landing on the day that you visit.

South Terrace Glover Playground /south-terrace-glover-playground/ /south-terrace-glover-playground/#respond Tue, 15 Jul 2025 00:12:12 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=78 Find it at: South Terrace 91ý

Another fully fenced park in the city, this South Terrace playground is located near the Unley/Pulteney Road intersection of the Parklands.

Well equipped and better suited for slightly older kids than the one a few blocks West, this playground includes a good sized, seated flying fox, numerous toddler and regular swings, slides for all ages and spring rockers. It also has a sizable climbing net for older kids, a rock climbing wall, sandpits and importantly, is home to one of the few wheelchair friendly ‘liberty swings’, which we love.

Other features include toilets, tables, water fountain and covered areas. Most of the play equipment is not fully shaded. Outside the large, fenced playground there are numerous playing fields and a basketball court.

Disability advocate, writer and actor Quentin Kenihan has been memorialised with an inclusive playground in 91ý’s Rymill Park. The $1m play space includes sensory elements, waterplay and features that encourage shared play and is designed with children and parents with wheelchairs in mind.

This fully fenced playground is thoughtfully designed and a place where children of all abilities can meet, explore and play together. Thanks to its mix of sensory and accessible equipment and welcoming layout, it beautifully embodies Quentin’s vision: a space where no one is left out. Whether kids like water games, sensory discovery, climbing, swinging this plays pace delivers.

It was always a goal of Quentin’s to have an inclusive playspace in 91ý to cater for all kids and this playground is a testament to his legacy. His family and friends were even consulted in the design process, as well as other disability support groups, to make sure everybody could have fun here.

From toddlers to teenagers, the playground offers a wide range of age-appropriate challenges and free-play options, encouraging active and imaginative play for everyone. Accessibility is at the heart of the space, with wheelchair-friendly equipment, wide ramps, and smooth paths ensuring children with mobility challenges can fully engage in the fun. The play space also promotes shared sensory and interactive experiences, encouraging children of all abilities to play and explore together.

There’s shade over part of the playground as well as lots of big shady trees to get out of the sun if needed. There’s lots of lush green grass to run on, sit on and picnic on plus sheltered seating and BBQ facilities too!

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the features that make this playspace welcoming to all:

There are 4 accessible car parks on Rundle Road located about 100m from the playspace, and another 2 accessible car parks next to the 91ý Bowling Club about 50m from the playspace.

Things to know

  • There is a pond close to the playground so please keep your eyes on your kids in case they wander off, and please don’t feed the ducks it’s not good for them.
  • It’s right next to Gluttony so if you visit during Fringe you can pop out the back gate for a play pre/post Fringe show.

Besides the fact that this playground has lots to do for the kids, after an upgrade in 2025 the a BIGGEST BONUS of this Robe playground is that it’s situated right behind Mahalia coffee factory coffee shop. Come for breakfast, lunch or just a coffee and you can sit outside on the deck whilst the kids sneak through the gate and enjoy this play space. Whilst not the most attractive play space we have seen the playground caters for all abilities and ages so has something for everyone to enjoy.

For the active or adventurous the the playground has lots of different types of climbing and balancing pieces. Rope climb, There is also lots of areas to explore and roam free or play some basketball.

The playground is fully fenced and has picnic facilities. Unfortunately it has no shade. Located right behind the Mahalia coffee shop for food and drinks if needed. BONUS you can use the back gate that takes you inside from the playground.

Wilfred Taylor Reserve Nature Playspace and Playground /wilfred-taylor-nature-playspace-morphett-vale/ /wilfred-taylor-nature-playspace-morphett-vale/#respond Tue, 18 Mar 2025 09:35:31 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=40967 Find it at: Wheatsheaf Road, Morphett Vale

The amazing $2.2 million nature playspace, located on the corner of Wheatsheaf and States Roads at Morphett Vale, has been designed for people of all ages to get outdoors and engage with nature.

Nature themes are featured as a tribute to the site’s importance for Kaurna people, and the site’s history as a working farm from the 1840s to 1960s. Stunning public art by local Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna and Yankunytjatjara artist Allan Sumner is scattered throughout the playspace.

There are two main areas, one for toddlers and younger kids and one for older kids, making it a great spot for the whole family.

The junior space is fully fenced (YES!) and features a Hills to Beach creative sand and water play area and a play farm area complete with wooden tractor and sheep rockers. This area also has a number of different swings, slides, seesaw and lots of sensory hands on play that we LOVE.

Older kids will also love this park with some very decent climbing structures, ropes course, awesome slide tower, wooden forts and a double flying fox. One of the seat is a bucket style for younger kids so siblings can ride together. Fun!

And probably our favourite part, the inclusive play opportunities that are available which include basket swings, a bucket seat flying fox, wheelchair-accessible carousel, raised sensory garden beds, a raised sand play table and a vertical xylophone.

Beautiful grassed open spaces for picnics and ball games, bike paths and bike racks, BBQs, sheltered picnic areas, drinking fountains, lighting, parking and TOILETS!!!

This is such a great space with lots on offer for kids of all ages and abilities. City of Onkaparinga, we think you’ve nailed it! Definitely one to check out in the school holidays!

Jervois Street Reserve Playground South Plympton /jervois-street-reserve-playground-south-plympton/ /jervois-street-reserve-playground-south-plympton/#respond Tue, 18 Mar 2025 09:34:26 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=12040 Find it at: 43 Jervois Street, South Plympton

Jervois Street Playground in South Plympton is up there with Morialta and Glenunga as one of our favourite playgrounds in 91ý. Some of the Jervois Street Reserve highlights are:

  • Fully fenced junior playground with lots to keep the little ones happy including double slides, a ‘bird’s nest’ swing, regular and baby swing, sandpit and a water play feature with pump action water pump and gorgeous water channel.
  • An older kids playground with mini flying fox, wooden/rope climbing frames, basketball and netball rings.
  • A number of areas for skating, scooting and riding bikes, including a ‘trike track’ which our balance biker loved!
  • A mountain bike/BMX path through behind the basketball court that our kids LOVED.
  • A small covered seating area, FREE electric BBQ and all-access toilet (1 large self-flushing).
  • A large grassed area for open play, ball games and dog lovers.
  • A fitness node with equipment designed for all ages.
  • Pickup a drive through coffee at the On-The-Run on Marion Road just a few hundred metres from the Reserve! 🙂

Jervois Street Reserve is a wonderful, open play space and you can definitely tell that a lot of thought and community involvement went into creating it. There is a gorgeous junior playground area which is fully fenced and caters well to the smaller members of the family. With a great double slide ideal for kids ages 1+, it allows younger kids the ability to make her way up the softfall climbing hill by herself, rather than having any ladders around. Plenty of natural wood and rock climbing options, a bird’s nest swing plus regular swing and ‘gated’ baby swings, music drums, a huge sandpit with sunshade, water play area and 2 cool sandtables with fixed attachments are all part of the fun. Our kids LOVED that the tunnel through the hill has the added fun of being made to look like a caterpillar hole through a giant green apple – just like The Very Hungry Caterpillar! With a number of wooden seats for parents to take a break knowing their kids are enjoying themselves (& fenced in!), we are giving this little kids playground a big thumbs up!

Jubilee Wooden Adventure Playground Port Noarlunga /jubilee-playground-noarlunga/ /jubilee-playground-noarlunga/#comments Thu, 13 Mar 2025 04:03:42 +0000 https://kidsinadelaide.wpengine.com/?p=19710 Find it at: Saltfleet Street, Port Noarlunga South

Jubilee Playground is one of the biggest and best playgrounds in the 91ý area. It’s an oldie but a goodie and most of the awesome play equipment that forms a castle is made out of wood which makes it even cooler! With HEAPS of things to keep kids from toddler to high school amused and has different sections for different abilities, it is easy to see why this is a local favourite.

We Love:

  • The huge wooden castle and surrounds that provides heaps of places for kids to run, hide and have fun,
  • Smaller kids “Tot Lot” section fenced off,
  • Musical bells,
  • Swings including a cool adult/child seated swing (see pic above),
  • Climbing frames including rock climbing wall and modern climbing frames,
  • Ship, rocket, fire pole, lighthouse and other cool structures,
  • Tunnels, balance boards and numerous slides,
  • Wheelchair accessible (although some areas have bark chips),
  • New modern section of playground includes water play and a giant giraffe!
  • BBQs,
  • Toilets 250m away including disabled access,
  • Lots of green space available for ball games, picnics, flying kites etc,
  • Fencing around a lot of the equipment,
  • Heaps of seating, benches and tables – some with shelter.

The new, modern area of the playground is outside of the wooden section and adds yet more equipment and more interest to Jubilee Playground. With everyone’s favourite water play (pack a spare change of clothes!) plus some more ‘regular’ playground items like swings, a net climbing frame and Cosi’s giant giraffe!

Hot tip – get there early if you’re planning a party or a bbq as it gets busy on the weekends. Bring a change of clothes for kids who love water play – honestly, bring a change of clothes either way coz they WILL find the water!

Barossa Adventure Station Playground /barossa-adventure-station/ /barossa-adventure-station/#comments Fri, 06 Sep 2024 05:42:06 +0000 /?p=51209 Find it at: Washington Street, Angaston

This family friendly and highly accessible facility (toilets YES!) features a 1km mountain bike trail, zip-line, in-groundtrampolines, multi-level adventure play space including a mega tower and slide, skate ramps, bouldering wall, half-court basketball, sensory sound forest poles, outdoor fitness equipment, play deck and plenty of picnic spots.

default

It is the perfect place to spend an hour, or the whole day and its only a short walk to Angaston where you can grab a bite to eat or browse some of the beautiful shops. We absolutely loved the road trip to get there (which for us was about an hour through the hills) and then finishing up our day with a fab lunch at the award winning 40s Cafe a short walk away.

We loved the open space, the heaps of parking, toilets, shelter and railway station design of some of the equipment, a nod to the railway precinct it was built in. The 1km mountain bike track is fantastic and the basketball court and skate park (plenty of scooters there on the day we went) add some great variety to the facility…..as well as some fitness equipment which was actually quite fun to play around with for kids and adults!

The mega tower slide is such an awesome landmark and every kid loves a massive slide right? (well Mr 6 did climb the tower but the enclosed slide was a bit too dark for him to go down…but he tried!)

We do think there is probably not a lot for the toddler age group though, which doesn’t mean they won’t have fun, but the equipment is catered towards the older kids with the skate park, huge slide and others. They also have used large cinder blocks in a spot for climbing/stairs and it might be tough for the little ones to navigate and cinder blocks aren’t particularly forgiving if they fall!

Overall this is an absolutely magnificent facility for the region and being so big that there is always plenty to do!
